2. AKC’s Canine Good Citizen® Program -- what is it?
CGC is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership and basic good manners for dogs.
The CGC Program lays a solid foundation for other activities such as obedience, agility, freestyle, and
performance events.
All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. The
CGC can be a stepping stone to other programs, such as Therapy Dogs, Inc. and Children's Literacy
Programs, where children improve their reading skills by reading to a most appreciative and uncritical
audience -- a well-behaved dog.
Praiseworthy Pups will prepare your dog to pass the CGC test, which is administered at Praiseworthy
Pups on a regular basis.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What kind of manners do you teach a dog?
Among other commands, in a Praiseworthy Pups Manners class, your
dog learns to sit, lie down, and stay on command. He learns to walk on
a leash without pulling; to leave objects alone when told to, and to come
when called.
Training sessions include praise, rewards, and games. We add a few
tricks for fun and deal with problems as they arise, and together we'll
develop a well-mannered pet!
If you wish, your dog can follow the Manners class with an AKC Canine
Good Citizen (CGC) class, take a test, and earn a certification from the
American Kennel Club (AKC). See the description below and check our
schedule to find out when the test will next be offered.
3. What is Clicker Training?
"Clicker training" is a term used to describe a way of training animals that has become increasingly popular in the last
several years. The scientific term for it is operant conditioning.
Simply put, an animal tends to repeat an action that has a positive consequence and tends not to repeat one that
has a negative consequence. Trainers take advantage of this natural tendency by providing positive reinforcement
following an action they want the animal to repeat; however, the reinforcement must happen As the behavior is
occurring, not afterwards. The actual reinforcement can't always be given to the animal at that precise instant, so
trainers often use a clicker as way of letting the animal know instantly that he is doing
the right thing.
The Clicker is a small plastic box with a metal strip that makes a sharp clicking sound
when pushed and released. This unique sound is faster than saying "Good dog" and
allows the trainer to mark with great precision the behavior for which the dog is being
reinforced. Check our schedule to sign up!
4. What is Shaping?
Shaping is a training method by which a behavior is taught by breaking it down into small steps, marking (usually with
a clicker) and rewarding each step until the animal has learned the entire behavior. Shaping is a fun way for people
of all ages and all ranges of training skills to train their pet.
Shaping has been successfully used to train many animal species, including whales and dolphins. Dogs, just like
dolphins, can learn all types of behaviors through shaping. They can learn simple behaviors like sit, down, or come,
or complex behaviors like how to be a service dog, run an agility course, or do search and rescue work.
Shaping teaches dogs to become problem solvers and with practice, become faster at learning new skills.
5. What other classes do you teach?
In addition to manners, obedience, and dog sports, we offer other classes that are educational, fun, and rewarding.
For example, Canine Freestyle combines training, teamwork, music, and movement to create an artistic,
choreographed performance. It is built upon the foundation of a positive working relationship between a dog and
handler. The series of classes we offer called Spot in the Spotlight can help prepare your dog to audition as an
animal actor, and he or she may be featured in a commercial or print spread.
We offer many other types of classes as well, such as fitness and doga (doing yoga with your dog). Check out our
schedule to see when a class you're interested in is being taught.
